VSO Leo Kanner 'Work in progress'

Transformation
VSO Leo Kanner

The Leo Kannerschool is a school for secondary special education in Oegstgeest. The school will move to a new location in the park-like area De Geesten. Starting point for the new school is an existing school building, originally from 1909 but altered and expanded several times.

The Leo Kannerschool needs four times as much space as the existing building offers. The assignment therefore largely consists of new construction on a relatively small plot with strict environmental restrictions. Special education also sets specific requirements. After the design research by Mevrouw Meijer in 2022-2023, Thomas Dirrix was given the follow-up assignment. The design is currently being further developed.

Dirrix designed a large and compact building section in three floors that contains most of the educational functions. Even though it is considerably larger than the historic school, it does not dominate due to its set-back positioning. The renovated old building is intended for the highest grades. Old and new are connected by a courtyard with a walkway.
