Primary IKEC 'Work in progress'
IKEC, Hoorn
In Hoorn, plans have been in place since 2016 for an integrated child and expertise centre (IKEC). An IKEC combines various facilities for children aged 0-12 with specific learning and developmental needs. For the IKEC Hoorn, it was decided to build a new building at the Zonnesteen location. Because most pupils are transported to and from school by bus, this is also a major logistical design task. For Mevrouw Meijer, this was an exceptional study because it was based on new construction rather than renovation. Based on the three study designs, KRFT received the follow-up assignment in 2018. Completion will be in the summer of 2025.
KRFT Architects
KRFT's original plan consisted of a grouping of fifteen 'houses' alternating with eleven enclosed outdoor spaces, so that the school became a kind of village. The idea of separate houses has been maintained in the final design, but the complex has become tighter and more compact, and has come to resemble conventional new construction more.
The outdoor space has two faces. On one side there is a view of greenery and water. On the other side, the available space is optimally used by dual use: the square is a parking lot when needed, and a playground during the rest of the day.
