The Garden School 'Work in progress'
Transformation
De Tuinschool
Primary schools De Beekvliet and De Hoeksteen share a school complex on the Weid in Velserbroek. The complex from 1988-1989 was originally intended for three primary schools, plus a shared section with a gym and childcare, operated by the municipality. One of the schools has left and another, De Beekvliet, has doubled in size.
The schools and the municipality want a life-extending renovation that is qualitatively equivalent to new construction and extends the lifespan by 40 years. The building must also be better adapted to the changed use. De Beekvliet wants to better connect its two wings and expand them further, and De Hoeksteen wants a different layout. A further question is whether the gym will be retained or replaced.

VLOT
Architects
Following the research by Mevrouw Meijer, VLOT architecten was given the follow-up assignment. Their design, with the motto ‘The Garden School’, emphasises the layout of the school grounds and the alternation of indoor and outdoor spaces. The building will include three patios. They bring light and fresh air into the heart of the schools and can be used for education.
Both schools will have a modest new building section with two floors. In order to meet the highest sustainability requirements, the school will have a completely new, insulated façade, made of timber frame construction. The design is now being further developed.
